Walmart shifts from plastic to recycled paper mailers for its e-commerce orders

We all know that plastic, and on top of that single-use plastic, is extremely bad for the environment because when it cannot be recycled and it takes millions of years to be completely destroyed as well. Along with that, the single-use plastic ends up going into our oceans and other water bodies which is harmful for our wildlife as well which is the reason why environmentalists have been calling for a ban on single-use plastic as well as plastic too. Now, Walmart has announced a new initiative towards the environment where it says that going forward, all its e-commerce orders will use paper mailers that too recyclable instead of plastic ones.

Walmart said that “Moving forward, nearly all orders shipped in plastic mailers from fulfillment centers, stores and marketplace items shipped with Walmart Fulfillment Services, will arrive in recyclable paper bag mailers. This transition is expected to eliminate 65 million plastic bag mailers or more than 2,000 tons of plastic from circulation in the U.S. by the end of the current fiscal year”. They also added that “customers nationwide will soon have the choice to opt out of single-use plastic bags for their online Pickup orders. Early tests indicate promising adoption rates and potentially help eliminate millions of single-use bags each year from circulation. Walmart expects to complete rollout nationwide by the end of the year”.

IN A STATEMENT, Walmart US Senior Vice President said, “Our commitment to regeneration is core to who we are and how we innovate at Walmart. Customers have told us how excited they are about these enhancements to make it easier for them to make more sustainable choices that support the planet and the next generation.” It is worth noting that while Walmart is still behind Amazon when it comes to e-commerce orders in the US, it is the second-largest e-commerce outlet in the US which means that the number of order fulfilled by them is still massive and this should make a huge difference in the next decade and more. Walmart will also give its customers the option to choose if they want their orders in a single package or different packages for sustainability.
